BFFL, poster art by DECOY

Where: American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW

When: Tuesday-Sunday 11am-4pm May 8th-June 6th

Why:
In this body of work, I was inspired by the memories and friendships that I'd built in my college years. It was at Berry College that I met my best friend Barbara. In those days, Barbara (aka. Relax), introduced me to the band, Modest Mouse. The Modest Mouse song, The Good Times are Killing Me, brings back memories of Barb getting the snow flake tattoo on her forearm senior year and going to concerts with her in Atlanta. Whether it’s giving good advice, sharing a laugh, or a shoulder to cry on, Barbara is truly my BFFL (best friend for life).

I am inspired by my feelings and my life. My art is an expression of me. By making public art, I am able to share my life experiences with a larger audience. My chosen mediums are stencils and wheatpaste. It is my favorite form of communication.

The art of DECOY focuses on figures not the figures alone, but their intersection with color and space. She is especially passionate about recording her immediate surroundings with her art. The art concentrates on the situations, people and places that form daily interaction. The resulting work is generally a distorted reflection of the original idea. The idea is not to copy life, but to express her memory of it.
